my tach is all over the place which is keeping me from tuning this engine correctly. sometimes at idle and w.o.t. it seems right but not all the time. i have replaced the rectifire with new o.e.m. but with no success. it is a faria tach which i replaced with another faria i purchased on ebay but still the same. it is pluged into control box with exception of gnd. wire which i ran direct to battery. i also to be sure i need to know correct # to set tach at. i shoud add the motor has a high speed miss just before w.o.t. that i can't seem to get rid of. thanks for any help as i prepare for boating season here in the north, i can't wait........

Re: 88 spl eratic tach

Install a 2,000 ohm resistor connected between the signal post (grey wire) and ground post (black wire) at the back of the tach. Use a 1 watt or higher resistor if you can get one. Also, it can be higher than 2,000 ohms, say 2,500 if that's what you can get easily. This works for all the engines with an unregulated rectifier. Set the pole selector on the tach to 6.

Re: 88 spl eratic tach

Thanks for the help. I'll make sure my tach is set at six and look around for someone to help me as to where to get the resistor as electronics is not my strong point. I can do just about everything else.
Thanks again.

For future information, Faria repairs their tachs. Inexpensively. One of the few instrument mfr's that does. No need to buy a new one. Check them out at their website: faria.com That is one reason why they are popular with dealers.
