 my 1988 88 hp spl starts easy warm or cold, cools well, but has a high speed miss after 3500 rpm all the way up to wot at 5200. plug wires are new (mallory) and spark plugs. compresstion is 130 on 2,3 4, and 138 on 1. timing is at 4 degrees at idle about 800 rpm in neutral. i use factory oils and fuel is fresh. when i got this motor i replaced the rectifier because it was not charging and tach was not not working. my tach works fine for awhile then gets eratic reading 5000 when it is only turning 3000 then goes back to normal. i ran a seperate gnd. wire for it to battery but it is still the same. the signal and battery wires are pluged into control box which i bought new on ebay about ayear ago. i tryed another faria tach i had but it reads the same. i have been playing with this for a while but no luck. i have a feeling the eratic tach is trying to tell me something but can'T pinpoint it. its ok if i don"t want to go fast but the motor is on a 1970 glastron gt 150 you all know i want to let rip! i would appreciate all the help i can get.thanks...............

Re: 88 spl high speed miss

You've got two separate issues going on. The tach issue is probably a bad rectifier-part of the charging system. When the rectifier goes bad, it quits charging the battery. Usually simlataneously, the tach starts to read erratically. If you purchased a Bombardier rectifier new from a dealer, it has a 1 year parts warranty. Make sure the two engine cables are really tight on the battery terminals. The miss is on the ignition side of the electrical system. That engine never came with mallory wires. Factory wires are a solid core wound steel wire. Sold in bulk at any Bombardier dealer. It is possible that the wires are shorting to ground when the rpm's increase. Check the positioning of the two bottom coil wires. If they are too close to the two cowl latches, the wires can spark to ground. Make sure you are running Champion plugs: QL77JC4.

Re: 88 spl high speed miss

thanks for the response. My computer blew out just after the post, and I just got it fixed.
The rectifier is less than a year old and is OEM. I will put a volt meter across the battery
and check my charging system when running. I have the ignition wires held close to the
engine with the straps provided with the motor. I am running the correct Champion plugs
which are new. I really appreciate the help. you may be on to something here, as far as
the arching to the cowl latches. The mallory wires may be of poor quality and I will try a
set of OEM's. Thanks !

Give it a run with the lid off to check the grounding out theory.
