Can someone tell me the procedure for installing a starter on my outboard. I seem to have lost the lock washers. do all the bolts use lock washers? I think I am suppose to insert all the bolts then tighten the front one first, when i tried this, the bendix gear would barely reach the flywheel. Any help is appreciated.

Re: 88 SPL starter install.

It would help if you listed the year of that engine or the model number. OMC manufactured a good many 85hp models.

That's simply a matter of snugging all of the bolts up evenly, then tighten them starting with the forward bolt but don't overdo it.

If the bendix doesn't engage the flywheel teeth, you've got the wrong starter or bendix drive. Did you compare it with your previous starter?

The lock washers are a must! Part number is 306325.

Sorry, its a 1989 88spl. I did compare with the old starter and is exactly the same.

I hate to ask, but are you observing the Bendix gear in its fully extended position or in the "relaxed" position. The Bendix gear should not touch the flywheel until the starter spins up.

Definitly in the extended position. I just turned it manually, I just need to try it again later today, it may just be the sequence that i tighten the bolts. Are the bedix gear teeth supposed to be fully inserted int the flywheel teeth?

Yes, they will fully engage the flywheel teeth...
