Hi all I have never run nor looked at a Suzuki outboard before now, have always run mercs, I am thinking of buying one, it?s a 1988 150hp, that is all I know as of now. What I would like to know is how reliable they are (how long they usually last) are they a thirsty engine and how hard are they to work on. I know it is usually a per person preference but I would like to know what some of you think just to give me an idea, I am running a force right now but usually run mercs I am trying to get out of my comfort zone and experience a few new things and this is one I would like to learn about.
Thank you for any info

Re: 88 suzuki 150 reliability & info

I picked up an 84 115 late last summer and have run it religiously since. I trust it very much and have been very pleased with it. It is my first Suzuki, I have owned only OMC previously. My 115 sips fuel, my largest outboard previous to this was a 50HP, and I think the fuel consumption is nearly the same as what the 50 was.

The only drawback I am experiencing is my local dealer is nearly an hour away. That said, Browns Point Marine online sells suzuki parts, and authorized service manuals.

My next boat I purchase will likely have another suzuki outboard on it.

Good luck if you choose to buy the Suzuki!

If it's a fresh water motor it should be fine. They are as durable as any other if they've been maintained properly. If you're buying it out of state and it's had any long term use in salt water I'd pass. Suzuki had in years past a "history" of corrosion issues. They've since corrected it.

A general rule of thumb on fuel consumption is 10% per hour per HP at full throttle.

I'd expect your engine to burn 15 gals an hour at full "load".... if you're pushing a light load it'll be lower.
