Last year we needed to change our impeller. Have done this before, but this time the whole housing needed changed, so we disassembled, waited for parts and went to reassemble. But had trouble as we can't get it to shift out of gear.

Best thing I can remember from last year... was that when you are in neutral and shift forward, it only moves the shaft a small amount to go forward or reverse, however, the shaft on the lower unit that changes gears, moves a great deal. It got out of line and now we don't know how to properly line it up. Going to disassemble it again tomorrow, it's been 6 months so forgive my very non technical description, but if you know what I'm trying to describe, please reply.

In the past, we slid of the lower unit, nothing got moved and we was able to slide it back up without a prob, but this time, the gear change shaft on the lower unit got moved.

Any advice would be appreciated cuz we wanna fish..

Thanks! 'ford,

The shaft will spin about 270 degrees around. To find neutral again, turn the shaft all the way Counter-clockwise (as viewed from above) when you first meet resistance that's the correct position for forward. Keep turning, it'll be quite stiff, and you'll find it'll stop again, that's neutral. To be sure, keep turning and it should be in reverse. Check by turning the prop shaft. Turn it back to neutral and fit it back to the motor.

Chris.............

Re: 88 XR4 - No water pee :( New pump housing

Chris, excellent instructions, made sense and got it back together. BUT, I have a problem. When we started it up on the muffs, we get no water peeing? Nada, nothing... I can feel air being pumped out the water discharge, but no water. Temp gauge started to come off of "C" so we got worried and stopped. Pulled it apart and rechecked everything. Still same results.

ANY IDEAS? We initally pulled it apart last year when we had taken it out for the first time of the season and we were heating up and peeing very little. We had to buy the whole water pump housing as ours was distorted and didn't look good.

Also, in our manual it states we should check the shim clearance between the bearing in the lower unit and the pump housing. We didn't as this looks different than that explained in the 86 V6 manual we have. I figured this is a tad different as it was an all new engine in 88.

Anyone have any suggs. Kinda worried our motor has other probs? Could the thermostats be stuck? But both of them and the old impeller wasn't shredding or anything so I can't believe it is plugged with something.

Thanks in advance, we anxiously await your replies..

Thanks

Phil

Re: 88 XR4 - No water pee :( New pump housing

Did you install the impeller correctly? With THE IMPELLER KEY that keeps it turning with the drive shaft???

Are the splines of the impeller pointing in the counter-clockwise position (looking from above)?

Did you install the housing plate correctly? If it's upside down it could mess thing up?

Did you install the guide tube with the rubber washer?

Do you have a manual?

Let us know...and good luck....

Had the white plastic guide, but I'm not recalling any washer???

Do you have a manual?

I have a 1986 Merc V6 manual up to 200, but the instructions and pics don't coincide with are xr4 since it was a different class.

For example it talks of shimming the lower bearing. Are application doesn't look like it is setup this way. The housing is quite away away from the bearing and it has another plate that appears to be a preload on top of it.

Let us know...and good luck....
Why would I feel AIR coming out the PEE hole?

Thanks for your help, any pics available of an exploded diagram?
