What are the noticeable and unoticeable differences between the 888 and the 225 Mercruiser Engines? Obviously the 225 has more horsepower probably due to the ca. But if the outdrive serial numbers fall in the same catagory as an 888 and a 225 in the same year range, how would you tell the difference??

Re: 888 and 225

I have been researching this same topic. The carb and intake were the main differences. Outside that, I think the 225 was only offered as a straight inboard, but don't hold me to that. The 888/188 only came as a 2bbl.

888 = 302,cid, 5.0l......

225 = 351W,cid, 5.8l........

Both ran the Same Carb(2bbl).........

The 225 is the 351 Windsor block... It's a little Taller,+ Wider than the 302 block.....
No, I don't have these #s.....

A 233 was also a 351 I think. I thought the 225 was an ib 302 4bbl. I saw a pair on ebay a while back,

No disrespect to Bondo or anyone else. Okay now you got me thinking what is what. I dug out my old Mercruiser book, The title of the book is
Mercruiser Stern Drive 1964- 1986. For the engine specs the book says:
Early Model MCM888/225S is the 302 CID motor
Early Model MCM233 is the 351 CID motor
I am just guessing that the 888 is the 2 BBL, and the 225S is the 4 BBL.
The MCM888 is rated at 188HP
The MCM225S is rated at 225HP
The MCM233 is rated at 233HP
Pretty sweet if the 4 BBL can add 37 horses, I may just put that 4BBL manifold I have laying around on my 888 block. Now I just need a carb.

Re: 888 and 225

I think the 225 was only made as an inboard, not a sterndrive, and I think they dissappeared before the demise of the rest of the Ford/Mercruiser line.

Hey Bondo, we'll let you slide on that one. ;)
