888 manifold blockage - see pics

After overheating issue i pulled the risers off of my 888 ford 302. The water jacket was very corroded on the starboard side. I tried to turn the 1/2 inch drive bolts out of the sides of the risers but after breaking the side off of one of the bolts i decided to stop. Anyway, I put the riser with all the blockage in a vise and beat on it with a hammer until all the yummy crunchy stuff came out just about. I managed to put a crack in the side of it in the process - see pics.

I am not sure if this will cure my 200+ block temperature but am guessing it can't hurt it. See pics of before and after knocking rust buildup out of water jacket. I am tempted to put risers back on and try my luck again but will probably end up taking off water pump tomorrow to see what i can find.

I think he broke em with the hammer TowRoper --- I could of rodded those out and sand blasted them and got another 10-years out of them.

Since you got them off --- might as well replace them. :p

I think I will pull my risers off this year and give them the once over.

What exactly do you mean by "rodded those out"?

Ayuh,... What I see is Scrap cast iron,...

No way I'd put them back on a motor,+ expect it to run...

You might be able to save the manifold logs by rodding (coathanger wire) them out and follow up with a good blasting, but that is iffy. The exhaust elbows (the part you cracked) should be replaced. That's where cooling water has to exit (mix with exhaust) and if plugged they will surely overheat the engine.

The sure bet is to replace the manifolds, end caps, and elbows, along with gaskets. You can probably salvage the brass hose fittings.

Yeah, I know your right --- they look real bad --- that was just a little joking around. That is why I said I am going to pull mine this year and look at them.

Mine have been on there a looooong time --- maybe I'll replace one riser --- eny-mini-miny-moe --- okay it is the starborad I'll replace :D

Have fun

"Throw me a friggin bone here", "I get no respect", "Tough crowd, Tough crowd." :D

Okay, I'll do the right thing and replace both ---- but, "I'm gonna keep em for spares", if I can find room on the boat

I am going to hook it back up and see what happens. The starboard elbow was blocked pretty bad but i got most of the rust out. also, the boot will cover the crack enough i think for it not to be a problem. i will update.

I think me jokes around too much especially on serious item like your exhaust system

These are serious items that need to be clean and free flowing to cool the engine, and any other items that are effected. Bond-o and Don S along with others are experienced and knowledgeable marine mechanics that have seen all of this and know what damage a plugged exhaust can cause ----> please take their advice.

I have a 1975 888/302 and those pictures you posted show an exhaust system that needs to be replaced ---- Mine have been replaced many times ----> that is why my boat is 34-years old and still runs nice. :D

I am going to try and salvage what i have with a little JB, these risers look pretty good now that they had a good going over. I am going to reassemble and see if temp is affected any. if temp is still up i will pull the logs and check water pump.
see pics. Also, you said "mine have been replaced many times"....where can i find a decent price on a set of logs and risers?

Expensive is the word ---- I can overhaul my engine for less than I spend on one manifold and riser.

One manifold is over $220 and the riser is about $115 without gaskets and shipping on the web. I would check ebay and craigslist if you want used parts.

I replace with new ---- but not all at the same time --- I do manifolds or risers. But, my next purchase may be the conversion to center riser exhaust as the whole kit is cheaper than the old log style parts. :)

Best of luck

i replaced the SB side log manifold on my '82 898 a few weeks ago. The best deal I found online for my specific manifold was at the site below:

http://marineengineparts.com/

I called them, really nice and knowledgeable. Flat rate shipping from NY to MN was 10 bucks for the 50lb manifold and the gasket set. (be sure you get gaskets and studs!) If there's a plate between the riser gasket and the manifold gasket, you'll probably need an extra for the riser as the manifold kits only come with the manifold side gasket. If you're getting both manifold and riser, you can probably disregard as the kits should come complete.

trickiest part was finding the right replacement p/n. Aftermarkets are way cheaper than OEM. On mine they built two different logs, one for each side.

I found another site: www.go2marine.com...they were more expensive for the center riser kit (around 830 bucks instead of five hundred some) but they also come with the hoses that go from the middle risers to the stock Y pipe, as well as all gaskets and hardware. I almost had the boat back together last night but i forgot i broke a bolt off in the thermostat housing. I had to order the proper tap to get the threads right but if she still runs hot and its not the water pump i will be getting one of those kits. I still have to see if my engine cover will have enough room for the center riser setup (keep in mind this is not hte orignal boat, the boat is almost twenty years newer..a 1992 17 foot Chris Craft) anyway i will update.
