I noticed before taking her out on her maiden voyage with new engine that the shift shaft was not fully seated and instead of a washer I temp raised the shaft with a 1/8 inch wide rubber hose wiretied to the base of the shaft to raise it. Cruisin and changing rpms for 15 min, reduced power from 3200 to 2500, gave the wheel to the girlfriend(mistake) so I could go in the back to check for leaks etc. Not 10 sec goes by and sounded like it just popped out of gear. Engin revd and ran to shut her down. Tried to put in rev and forw and nothing. So at the time of the popping out of gear or whatever, and after pulling it on the trailer, the shift shaft was making good contact up inside the upper unit slot. Manually,(after removing the hose thing, Shifting feels normal. I could turn the shift shaft because it was lower than the slot. Prop clicks one dir and locks in the other as it is suppose to. Spline out of coupler turns, upper shift slot faces forward ok and No metal in gear oil. If I hold the shift shaft up into the slot and have someone shift it, it all acts normally. Is there a reason(s) why this thing just unloaded? I need help as to how to go about troubleshooting this. New engine, rebuilt upper, original lower.

Because the washer that sit over the shift shaft needs to be stainless steel, not rubber....Am I imagining things, or did we not talk about this before?... :) ....JK

No your right. Im trying to determine why it unloaded so I can figure out the course of action. Knowing the shift shaft was fully engaged, Thought there might be a problem with the clutch dogs or something else in the lower unit. I do plan to put a washer in it but don't want to do that and find it was something inside the lower unit. My Seloc manual does not cover this in detail. It just troubleshoots noises. Because it is acting right when checking it out of water as mentioned in the post, just didnt want to miss something.

Put the washer in....It takes less than 1/2 hour....I would not be convinced until I had it set-up right....Did it over heat? Ya might have smoked the engine coupler.....It (the Drive)should not come out of gear under load....I would stick my hand back by the coupler & see if I find any metal shavings there....For the price of a gaskat set I might look at the drive shaft splines....JK

Roger that. Thanks If that coupler spun, would I smell rubber?

Is the engine temp still okay when idling in the water? Did the hub in the prop slip? Mark the hub and the prop and see if the marks move under load.
