Good day guys,
Just got my motor back today :)
However now one of the flywheel magnets is cracked in half and my stator is melting!
Can I please get some info on what causes this to happen? The tech. told me they are worth some $$
Yikes...anywhoo,He said all cyl. are at 75-80 too
and that the motor should last me a long time with regular maintanance. cool.
thaks for any input......John.

Ask them is that that right compression on clyinders.
Or ask maybe the parts departments somewhere else what it should be. I don't how a flywheel could break like you said and the engine run. So when you took the engine in to fix the first time they should told you this. I believe I right. What is going on why was it in the shop? Because it not running. So it should have told you this. Unless you took a broken engine into the shop and told to fix something without the engine running. What happen here with this you and the shop? What did you tell them and how did they find this now out.

Re: 88'Evinrude 225hp....Vro done...now flywheel damage?

the reason the flywheel magnet cracked is because omc GLUED them in instead of casting them in rust gets under the magnet and wa-la loose magnets better check the others cause they arent far behind its normal to see a little weepage on the stator windings on these engines the guy at the shop was right about it lasting along time because they dont stay running long enough to wear out...and madecool dont blame the mechanics for sh**y products we dont make em and we dont break em

I won't you to point out where i blamed anyone I have not got there yeat. But you seemed to think I am getting close to blaming someone so be it. Just because he is working on outboards. What you said jumped the gun. I did not blame anyone. But I tried to find out what was going on here. So mind your own business. Bud. Unless you have good reason than you are welcome. But this is the good old USA and it seems like I have to tell you this for some reason. So my turn to jump the gun . Maybe you are trying to rip some off. Hun . You got be smart to fool me. Now drink some beer and post another message.

Hi Gilligan....

The compression seems a little low to me. Could be all it needs is a good decarb.

Mistreatment of the flywheel, ie...dropping it, beating on it, usually is the cause of a cracked magnet. I would not run the engine like this. The magnet as a hole, has two poles. North and South. This sets up the field that induces voltages in the coils under the flywheel. When the magnet cracks, now esentially you have two magnets with north and south poles. When the magnet goes by a coil, the polarity of the field is changed sorta in mid travel. This reverses the current induced in the coil. You end up with a hot coil. The flywheel costs about $845 list. (sorry, didn't want to make ya throw up) Search around for a second hand wheel. Ebay may be a place to look.
I would also be interested why you took the engine into the shop in the first place also. Did you just purchase the engine?

Re: 88'Evinrude 225hp....Vro done...now flywheel damage?

The reason it went to the shop was to disable the VRO. So I told him might as well check timing, compression, and some other things.
He said the compression was a little low but still ok. And he could not set timing properly, so he pulled the flywheel and that is when he found the broken magnet. and the melted stator.

Hi Gilligan...

At your local dealership, Johnny/Rude, ask for part number 584304. This is the magnet replacement kit. Contains magnet and epoxy glue. Cost is $12.99. Hope we've helped.

Good Luck!
