Got all the way past the 2 Ring clips and removed the reverse gear.

Is there another step to take before I can slide the propeller shaft out?

-or- do I now use a wrench to lock onto the pinion nut while i turn the shaft counter-clockwise.

thanks

PS: 1995 88SPL

If you are wanting to remove propeller shaft this is how to do it:
1) Remove water pump housings and upper bearing housing
2) Remove pinion nut
3) Tap driveshaft to jar it while pulling up on it to loose pinion gear
4) Retreive pinion gear, pinion nut and any bearings that fell out of pinion brg
5) Shift lower unit into reverse and unscrew shift rod
6) Yank out the propshaft along with foward gear and foward bearing housing
(make sure it stays in revese or it will never come out) If it will not pull out ensure it is still in reverse, hold gear housing propshaft pointing down, take the gear housing in you hands and smack it skeg first on a hard object such as table end, have someone catch the assy as it falls out.

thank you!

I got it disassembled following your steps.

I have 2 feet disassembled, both 88SPL foot, 1995 and a 1986.

the '95 gear housing has a broken skeg and broken teeth on the forward gear. internally, it looks much cleaner, but the gears have hella wear on em.

the '86 gear housing looks great from an external wear view and internally the gears look almost new, yet the shafts have a good amount of spotting on them.

I have a complete gearcase gasket set on the way from iboats now.

I've been careful to keep all the shims in original order on both gearsets.

my initial plan was to simply swap in the better gears and keep the shims as they are for reassembly.

When pre-reading the manual, I knew there would be special tools in use, and so far have been successful crafting my own, so I thought i'd post 2 tools i made so far in this project.

First tool, was originally a drum brake spring tool. Since I didnt really use it that often anyway, i used my torch to straighten and shape so i could use it on the snap-rings. The long handle worked perfectly.

The second tool was really an improvisation of a normal steering wheel puller.
No generic puller you buy is going to have an 8" threaded bolt, so I went to home depot and bought 2 15" 5/16 threaded rods with washer and nuts.
Cost: $1.70.

The next hurdle is the bushing spacer calibrator...
