I was given a boat with an '89 225 on it that i had to free up a stuck piston. Now that its back together, it runs at high rpm but will not idle.

Today, i got a large clear container to put the lower unit in and run the engine. To my surprise, i noticed there was no exhaust coming out of the prop center.

when i had the engine apart, i had all the pistons out so i could clean them. i'm asuming the exhaust side is towards the center of the engine and the port side is on the left, looking at the heads from behind the engine? or is that my problem?

My thinking is when the boat is in the water, there is too much back preasure. I took off the lower unit and didnt see any restrictions, so i'm thinking its something in the powerhead or i messed up the piston placement.

Any suggestions as to what to look for?

Re: '89 225 looper exhaust

The exhaust side is toward the center of the engine for both banks of cylinders. I'm sure you noticed that all pistons are designed for either the port or starboard sides of the engine and are inscribed with the words "port" or "starboard", and "exhaust". The 3 pistons with the word "port" go on the left side when viewed from the rear. The word "exhaust" always goes toward the center. So it sounds like you instllalled the pistons correctly. The connecting rods also have an up and a down side.
