Just bought an 89 16' Tracker with an 89 25hp Johnson Tracker engine, really good buy but found that the air breather/cleaner is missing. All I see is the open throat of the carb!!! I am asking if anyone has one for sale and if not, can someone tell me if there is a span of years I should be looking for in my search. For example, does an air breather/cleaner from 1985 thru 1990 fit my carb?

There probably isn't an air cleaner, but there is usually a black plastic box looking thing over them.
Go to www.shop.evinrude.com and go to the parts tab, then follow it to your motor and look around. You can find parts there if needed, or perhaps on ebay. You can also browse other year motors so which ones used the same part # if you do find that you are missing a part.

I've never seen an outboard with one. Dust just isn't an issue normally out on the water.

It doesn't have one because it never had one... Outboards don't have air cleaners. Some models have silencers that cover the carb area, but yours does not...

Ya'all are prob. right. All I know is that there was a bunch of what looked like destroyed black sponge material all over the engine. There are bolt holes in front of the carb. so I fig. a cover of some kind went there. Thnx..will look into web sites you suggested.

That sponge material is likely the foam insulation that used to cover the inside of the cowling. Gasoline likes to melt that stuff into an oily goo over a period of years...

You are right, the stuff is what was left of the insulation in the cowl. I could not find any part that was original to this engine so I am going to run it w/o any baffle or carb. cover. Thx for all the help on my off the wall question.
