i took my boat out fishing for the first time this year and she ran very well. today i was walking by and spun the prop. click, click, click it sounded like one of those garden noisemakers! that was spinning it in rev. i spun it fwd and heard a little but not as much. i did put on a new prop and impeller this winter, but everything went smoothly.when out on the boat saturday, i did shift once into rev and it clunked a little going into gear but that has been the norm. i didn't have time to pull the prop today, but even if i did, i'm not sure what to look for or where to start. i did shift into fwd before removing my lower unit when i serviced it, but i'm afraid i must have done something incorrectly. when you pull straight out on the prop there is about 1/8" of give. is that also correct?? HELP!!! thx.

Sounds liek the dog clutch is slightly engaged. i woud adjsut the shifter cable. Mine did the same thing ( 89 Bayliner with 5 liter OMC cobra) and I changed the shifter cable adjsuted it and it was all fine after that

yeah, BOND-O, its parked in my driveway in neutral and i walked by and spun it and heard the clicks. i don't ever remember it doing this. is it normal?
i was just reading a similar post and it sounds like i need to adjust my shift cable.
also, in another post someone asked if the prop spun with the muffs on in neutral. mine does that too but very slowly. i always thought that was weird. so, does the diagnosis sound correct?? thx

If it's in neutral and you spin the prop and it clicks on the clutch dogs, then it needs some cable adjustment....... Soon, or you will round the clutch dogs over.
Regarding the prop movement when in neutral... It's normal. Just the flow of the thick gear lube over the gears makes them turn. Don't forget, the pinion gear in the lower ALWAYS turns, just like the raw water pump impeller...... when the drive is put together, it's basically the same vertical shaft.
