KLBARKER,

First off, without a manual I WOULD NOT go into that lower unit.

In the meantime, change the fill and drain plug seals. They are the most common source of L/U leaks.

Re: 89 40 hp johnson

replaced fill and drain plug seals filled it with new oil run it one day and about as much water as oil. when the motor is tilted oil runs from small hole in front of lower unit just above where two meet.how many ways can water get in. pulled prop and washer and did dig a small amount of fishing line off of prop shaft. there is also 4 bolts in this area. the two horizontal looks like takes the outside housing that holds the two seals and the other two that lets the hole unit come out. have no manual and need to go fishing before i can order one. please help. also what i have been reading on the forum is that there are seals in the water pump area that could bring water in. the boat has been sitting for two years prior to this year but seems to be watering fine . again please help crappie season is hear in tenn.
