My power trim on my '89 Evinrude 40hp works OK for the most part. Typically, when I use my rig I start out with the trim close to completely down and trim it up to the maximum trim/maximum speed position. However, aftter a few minutes running at full speed the motor will push back down to a lesser (slower) trim angle. While it only takes a quick push of the button to correct this, it's getting annoying. So my questions are... Is this normal or is it a symptom of internal leaking in the trim cylinders? Assuming this is a symptom of leakage, what is the usual remedy? Complete rebuild of the cylinders? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

McG,

Has this symptom been there since new?

Are you sure you have power trim and tilt and not just tilt.

Otherwise, it's probably an internal leak in the valves.

Also, check to make sure your manual release screw is tight (right side) and make sure the unit is full of fluid.
