ive got a 1989 40 hp mercury electric start, oil injection motor that im trying to find out how i can get more power out of it. the only thing that is done to the motor right now is a stainless prop. i talked to one boat mechanic that said if i do anything to the motor it will make it slower. does anybody have a take on that? ive also heard of putting 60 hp carbs on it. just trying to find out what i can do. im open for anything as long as its not "far out there"

That 40hp should be the inline 4 model and there is not much you can do to increase hp as it is restricted by the reed blocks and block design.
