89 5.0 Mercruiser pulley locked up - need part ID

The other day I was on the lake and something was rattling along with my belt squeeling. I believe this led to my problems. I had changed the altenator belt (the one in the back) a few weeks before and in the process took off the front belt (the power steering belt?). After reading some threads it seems like the belt was too tight and now I have a worn out bearing since it has locked up, and burned my belt. Since I believe I know my problem I need help identifying the part. The pulley on the top right hand corner (outside) is the one that appears to be warped/broken/locked up. Is this a tensioner/idler or is there a better name for this part I can find and order to replace. Do I replace the bearing or the entire pulley? Also, how much tension should there be in my belts?

Thanks for any help.

Here is a good picture. This is of a 5.7, but it looks just like my 5.0.

Ok, I believe I have identified this as the power steering pump pulley. If I were smarter, I probably could have determined that right away. So, I'm going to order that pulley part No. 861578 and hope that everything is right. I will try and reply the outcome by next week since I will not be able to install it until Friday.

Remove the belt. Does the pulley turn? If not, replacing the pulley will not start the pump turning. The pump has to be replaced. Besides, you need a puller to remove the pulley.

I have not tried to turn the pulley. I know the pulley is out of alignment, and the belt was burned where it touched the pulley, it created a lot of smoke. Are you saying I need to buy a $500 pump as opposed to a $60 pulley? I have a puller that may or may not fit into place.

Well this is bad news. Fortunately, I may have have found a used power steering pump that I can get much, much cheaper than $500 for a new one. So I guess it is possible I put the belt on too tight and ruined a $500 pump. Maybe I can find how much tension should be in the belt and make sure it is very accurate for the next time.

The power steering pump is the same as the automobile pump, it is not marine specific. Take your old pump to any parts store for a replacement.
You should feel better about trashing a $45 pump instead of a $500 one.
One of very few items on a marine engine that isn't marine specific, don't get into the habit of using automobile parts on your marine engine.

Thanks for the advice. I will definitely look into that. Hopefully I can figure out how to put it on (hopefully all the connections are the same).

Take some of the money you just saved and buy the Mercruiser manuals for the engine and sterndrive. Your engine will like you, your sterndrive will like you and reinstalling the pump will be a lot easier. When you read the scheduled maintenance section, and follow it, your boat will like you.
Manual will cover belt deflection.

Well good, I already have that. It was not helpful on replacing the up trim solenoid. For anyone who does not know, the blue wire goes to the up trim and the green wire goes to the down trim. God made the sky up above blue, and the grass down below green. Now, I feel like I have contributed something.

From Mercruiser:

It is assumed that these personnel are familiar with the servicing procedures of these products, manufactured and marketed by Mercury Marine. That they have been trained in the recommended servicing procedures of these products which includes the use of mechanics common hand tools and the special Mercury Marine or recommended tools from other suppliers.

When you were replacing the trim solenoid, did you mark the wires?
Did you look in the wiring schematic?

Ayuh,.... What I just read said to Diagnose the issue before you go buying parts you don't need,+ can't identify....

Until you remove the belt,+ Inspect the offending pulley,+ Whatever it might be attached too,...
You don't need to be buying parts at a halfabuck, or halfa Grand...
Whatever the Pulley is mounted to is no doubt Junk,+ needs replacing,....
Get it Off,... Maybe pop a few pictures,+ We'll help ya get back to Boatin'....
As Cheaply as Possible btw....

I did something better than that. I took about 7-8 pictures of the process and reviewed them as I put it back together. And the trim worked after I finished! I looked to the book for replacing a solenoid and did not look for wiring diagrams.

I should have done that last night, but I didn't. I will definitely inspect it closer before I buy a part. Maybe I will take the belt off tonight and see what the pulley does when I try and turn it. I will post my findings later. Thanks for the feedback.

I looked to the book for replacing a solenoid

Maintenance manuals can appear to be vague. Example, the factory manual states: remove the six nuts, remove the trim cylinder bolts, shift into forward gear, remove sterndrive. In reality, the sterndrive in question hadn't been removed in ten years. The gimble bearing was greased twice each year. The excess grease came out of the bearing on to the shaft that goes into the coupler. The excess grease on the shaft dried, preventing the shaft from sliding through the bearing for sterndrive removal. By the time I arrived, the owner of a questionable marina had two large pry bars between the sterndrive and the transom, marring the mating surfaces (aluminum), making future sealing difficult. The boat owner is complaining that the manual sucks, "All it says is remove the sterndrive!". In a normal situation the sterndrive would have just slid out. How did Mercruiser know the drive hadn't been removed in ten years?

Re: 89 5.0 Mercruiser pulley locked up - need part ID

Last night, I took the belt off the Power Steering Pump and tried to turn the pulley. I could force it, but it definitely wasn't free-spinning. I have a picture below of what it looks like and you can see the pulley is out of whack and the belt is burned where it touches the pulley. After the advice I have read here, I need to take the pump off and take it to an auto parts store to try and match it. If that doesn't work out, hopefully I can find a used one for a good deal. I also hope the manual has good instructions, but it doesn't look very complicated. I will try and post my results after I attempt this on Friday. Thanks for all of your advice, any more input is appreciated

takes a special little puller to remove that pulley from the pump. It is also used to put it back. Do not pry, beat, hammer or otherwise force the pulley. You will ruin both pieces....you can rent or buy it at the auto parts store...

I was told I needed a new pump if the pulley is locked up. Which is correct? A new pulley, or a new pump? The pulley is $60. The pump is $500. Someone else said you could buy an auto pump for about $50.

Ayuh,... Your pictures are nothing but an Angelfire logo,...

If the Pump isn't turnin properly,.. You need the Pump....
If the Pump isn't turnin properly,+ the Pulley is Trashed,... You need Both...

As noted above, you need a special Puller to remove,+ reinstall the Pulley on the Pumps...
