Ok guys adjusting base timing at idle. On the cover it says 5 btdc. Seems like everything else says 8 btdc. Just wanna clarify where it is supposed to be. Also what rpm should it be fully advanced at and what is that spec. Thanks guys

Could use a serial number to verify if there are other issues, but 1988 and 1989 and later motors are 8 BTDC. I mention 88 models because the boat may be a 89 but the motor could have been a left over 88. In any case I'm not finding 5 BTDC

Total advance is between 20 to 24 degrees

Look on the ignition module and you'll see either 'V8-22' or 'V8-24'. Find that and we can give you an advance curve.

Chris.......

Edit: Based on it being either 88 or 89, then it should be V8-22... (fully advanced, 22 degrees plus initial timing, at 3400rpm)

ok engine serial number is 0C439690 on the module it says v8-22. timing set at 8 btdc. at around 700 rpm. I dunno why I was thinking 5. anyways. the reason for this is up around 4000 according to tach. not sure how accurate maybe its around 3500. 3500 to 4000 it just falls on its face. back out of it a little runs good. I have checked the fuel pickup screen which is clean. I have checked the anti siphon valve. ball is not froze up and moves very freely. I have checked the screen in the carb which is clean. im gonna throw on a new fuel water separator to make sure it is good. I have not checked total timing yet which is what im gonna do sat if I can float it. have not checked secondarys yet either of fuel pressure. maybe pump is weak. anybody have any suggestions

Nope, that's the drive serial number. It's a 1988 1.50:1 Alpha One drive...

As I suspected... See timing curve above, it's the right one.

Carburetor is most likely a Rochester Quadrajet. And it sounds like the secondaries are leaning out. Time to pull the carb and go though it (clean, adjust, reassemble)... Take your time, be methodical and meticulous.... Soak the carb parts in cleaner overnight and blow everything clean with DRY compressed air, especially the small drillings. Get the right carb overhaul kit for that carb... It's likely the carb number is 17080565, and the gasket set is THIS one...
