I am planning on replacing the lower unit oil for the first time (boat bought just before Christmas) can anyone tell me a) how much oil I'll need for this engine? and b) whether Yamalube SAE90 (API GL-4) marine grade HYPOID gear oil is suitable for the job? The engine will be used exclusively in fresh water. Many thanks

don't force the plug. if it won't come out, then it won't come out. it's one of those things where if you skip a year or two of maintenance then the plug might seize into its hole.

not a big deal since you can just dump it out the top when you do the impeller. if you do, the use a new AS568A-151 o-ring around the shift cover and AS568A-139 around the bearing cage.

oops. sorry. better check those AS-#'s. I listed 3 & 4cyl. numbers. they may not be same for 50HP.
