 I just returned from the lake from the very first trip on my boat. I have a Johnson 70 horse outboard (1989). All was going great up until about 20 minutes into our ride when the motor began to go through something that is difficult to describe. It began to have power that would come and go. It never died out completely, but would have power that would last 1 or 2 seconds, it would then die for about the same amount of time and then instantly run for another second or two. It continued back and forth doing this for 15 minutes until I got back to the dock. The only thing I have done is replace the plugs and gear oil prior to taking it out.

Welcome to iboats!

Definitely sounds fuel related. Either your gas, or if your gas is fine, how your engine is getting it or the lack thereof. Check the simplest things first... Do you have internal or external gas tanks? If external, then make sure your vent is open. I've had them vibrate shut before, and the engine has trouble getting gas then. Is your fuel fresh? Look for a clog in your fuel line by pushing the ball on the connector end that goes to the engine. If your fuel bulb is pumped tight, then gas should squirt out fine. New fuel filter wouldn't hurt either. If all that doesn't help, then spray some carb cleaner in your carbs. There may be some plugging there. Keep us posted.

Jeff

Re: 89' 70 horse Johnson power surge

I just checked the plugs and they were fouled. Alot of oil on them. The gas tank is internal and the screens on the vent appear to be clean. The fuel is most likely not fresh other than what I put in today, but I only added three gallons to fill it up - my guess is that it holds 10 to 15 gallons. It has an oil injector and as I was checking maintenance records I noticed that the mechanic said to premix the fuel until the injector could be verified as working (record from April, 2004). Since I could not verify it to be working, rather than risk it, I premixed the fuel as well because I could tell what was in the tank was also premixed. It did appear that I did use some of the oil from the tank, could this be adding to my problem?
Thanks,

John

If your plugs are fouled then I would suspect that you may be losing spark intermittently. You might just nee to rebuild the carbs and get it over with.

If you pre-mixed the oil in the tank... and also have the oil pump mixing oil into the gas, I'd think that's your problem. Especially since your plugs are oily and fouled.

I'd either verify that your pump is working and NOT put oil in the gas, or disconnect the pump and keep the oil in the gas.

You're giving the motor double the oil it needs, that'll cause plug problems.

Either way, replace the gas and put fresh plugs in.

I completely changed the gas, verified the oil injector is feeding the motor and put in new plugs. I am going back out tomorrow to give it another shot.
Thanks,
John

Do yourself a favor and remove that VRO and just premix no problem for 10 - 15 gals of gas.
