89 88hp stalls at idle

I have an 1989 88hp Johnson that runs like a champ at wot but dies at idle. I have replaced all fuel lines and bulb and have even tried running on a different tank. I have put in new plugs and tried adjusting the idle screw but all it does is make the rpms jump up to 2000 before it has an effect and when I back off the engine dies. I do know the bubble will stay firm. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Greg.

Greg,
This might be a long shot but it sounds like the way my 1989 100hp ran when I got it. I cured it by going though the link and sync procedure. The fact that the linkage was holding one of the carbs open just a little bit. It was idleing at around 2000 and if you backed the timing down to try to make it idle down it would stall. If you have a manual just follow the procedures. I think that would be a good place to start.

Also have you started with a compression test?

I have done a compression test and it wasn't the greatest,average was around 100 with only a little variation. I have also done a decarb and that did make it run alot better but the idle is now my only problem.

Then I would follow Guys advice about the link n sync procedure. The idle should be set to 650 under load in gear. In the water. On the muffs that will equal about 1000 to 1100 without the backpressure on the exhaust.

Just wondering if you solved your problem with idleing? I had the same problem, but could move the tilt until the engine was level and it would idle smooth as silk. Just wondering about yours.

Think I have tried that but, I will try that tomorrow.
