I would first like to say thanx for the enormous amounts of information on this site. What an incredible resource for a novice such as myself to be able to use for restoring an old neglected boat.
So I would like to contribute my own restoration project to the list. i recently purchased this baretta after doing extensive research on this site. In order to avoid any long term problems that i may create myself, i put my new crafts life in your hands.
I will post extensive pictures tomorrow with the beginning of the project, but i had a few questions before i started as i am on a time crunch to get this project underway. (i want her to be seaworthy by mid may -- possibly way over ambitious, but we'll see)
1. What is the best method for removing the cap. i've looked around and people say they take them off but i can't really find anywhere with a method explaining this. it seems like i just take the rubrail off, and then take out the screws out that underneath the rail. from close inspection, it looks like there is also some sort of epoxy holding the cap on, but i won't know for sure until tomorrow. my plan was to just take a razor knife and attempt to cut into it to seperate it. any suggestions would be appreciated. again i apologize for not taking more time to sift through the info here cause i'm sure i'm overlooking a thread here.
2. currently the heart of this beast is under question. i was able to hook up a battery and toss a rod on the starter to get it to turn over. but at the moment i don't have a gas source hooked up. i plan on pulling the engine before i redo the entire deck. i'm torn between just taking the entire thing to a shop and doing an overhaul and doing it myself. the money is not really an issue and time not being on my side, that may be the option i'm leaning towards. was curious if anyone had done something similar and if they could give me a possible price range on what that would run. i do know the engine isn't siezed up and was told that it was running on the river last summer. It also looks extremely clean.(it's a volvo something or other, i think 225? - I/O )
again the full information, engine specs, and pics will be posted tomorrow which i think would help tremendously in answering these questions.
