'89 DT 55 Broken Crankcase Seal

After giving the motor to my mechanic after trying to launch the boat unsuccessfullly because the engine died while under a load, he told me that it was a broken crankcase seal. He also said that this was a common problem on this engine. The thing that gets me is that it runs like a champ in nuetral. If there's a compression leak between cylinders, shouldn't it not run at all?

Without commenting on the accuracy of the mechanic's diagnosis, the engine will probably run on even 1 cylinder and with a crankcase leak when in neutral without a load.
