Hi,
I have an 89 Evinrude 150 Xp on a 17 1/2' blazer bass rig. The boat runs great and seems to get on plane fast and has great top end. But, i have a problem with it wanting to bog down and quit running when I am trailering it. Motor is trimmed up some. Also, the idle seems a bit on the low side, idles till put in gear then dies. maybe 600 to 700 rpms when in gear at idle speed. I have picked up an repair guide to help make adjustments to the idle speed. I was thinking that rebuilding the carbs would solve bogging issue and maybe get me a better idle speed after reading some of the other post with simular problems.

Since i have discovered this site a few weeks ago, I have done the following to the engine.
Decarbed well, with seafoam deepcreep. what a difference that made, it runs alot smoother now! Also i have changed the spark plugs, the ones that came out were oily and kinda wet looking but not badly.

will a carb rebuild/cleaning solve this?

Sounds like you may have a low speed jet clogged in one of your carbs.

Thanks for the reply Fireman57. I Picked up carb kits today. P/N 439076. This will be my first attempt to rebuild a carb. Repair rates here are 90.00/hr, at that rate i figure i need to learn how to repair things myself.

Re: 89 evinrude 150 bogs when loading onto trailer

Its not unusual for motors to bog when powerloading, especially if the motor goes deeper as the bow goes on the trailer. There will be added backpressure. The larger the carb venturi, the bigger the problem. The more pitch in the prop, the bigger the problem. It can be a combination of things.

The decarb was a good place to start. Cleaning the carbs is also a good idea. Cant hurt.

You mentioned you changed plugs. Make sure they are Champions. Be sure the fuel is fresh and 87 octane.

It kinda bothers me that you say the motor idles at 600-700 in gear and dies. That motor should be capable of idling at 500 in gear all day. Since its an XP the odds are that its on a bass boat or some type fishing boat that sets low in the water at the stern. Thats not going to hep the idle situation. If you have a hydraulic jackplate try running it up to relieve backpressure when loading.

BTW -- what is the top rpm with an average load?

Dhadley, The boat is a 17 1/2' bass rig that does happen to sit really low in the stern. Also when i changed the plugs i went with champion QL77jc4's and the gas is 93 octane. The prop im running is a: SS 13 1/2 X 25 cupped. Top rpm is around 5500-5800 maybe a little more, at that point im doing 70 plus mph so looking at the guage is seldom. I am planning on going out in it this sat before i tear the carbs down i'll try raising the jackplate up some when loading her back up.

Sounds like a good rig. Good choice on plugs but I'd stay away from the 93 octane. Unless the heads have been cut or other work has been done.

Let us know how you make out!

Good luck!

Re: 89 evinrude 150 bogs when loading onto trailer

Well , rebuilt the carbs and carried it to the lake. Cranked right up. idled good even after put in gear. but sounded like it was struggling a little bit.i figured it was because it was cold. took off across the lake, as i jumped on the gas to get on plain i noticed it acted like it had air or something in it that need to be worked out of the fuel system; then it took off like normal. After i ran across the lake i slowed down to idle speed and it did fine so back across i go. get close to dock and kill the engine. Start it back up, fires for a split sec then dies. does this a few times untill i choke crank it a few times, when it started it acted like it wasnt getting enough gas or maybe to much. it wouldnt idle in gear and had a hard time just in neutural.

Loading it back on the trailer i raised the JP and it did alot better but seemed underpowered.

Any ideas guys?

Check all your fuel lines and connectors for air leaks.

Struggling for fuel is not a good thing. Time for a compression test.

Did the compression check today, 89/90 psi on all 6 cylinders. Also, noticed a small fuel leak at the VRO pump. I think one of the worm clamps has broken. Going to replace that tommorrow.

Is the low compression responsable for the problems? If so what are my options.
Thanks!

They seem a little low to me but they are well within the 10% variance that is looked for. Fixing your fuel leak sure can't hurt. Check the line for cracking.

Should i have warmed up the motor before the compression check? I did it on a cold motor. Does that matter?

i'm having a similar problem with a bit low compression and air leaks i guess if you have a bit of low compression a small air leak can be a big problem. just curious at what compression would an engine run satisfactly w\\\ whats the cut off
