the motor is an 89 model evinrude 88 spl mounted on a 17' alumacraft super bandit.had a new tilt/trim
unit installed on it 2 years ago.last summer it started leaking down on me.out of the water it will stay up
for about 5 minutes before it has leaked all the way down.in the water under power it happens as soon
as you get on the throttle.there is no fluid leaking out.I have checked the fluid level & bled it per manuals
instructions.dont know if this could be related or not but sometimes the boat seems to be trying to turn
all the time.I have to keep constant pressure to the right on the wheel or we go in circles to the left.this
happens at all rpms/speeds.I will be going down the lake & its steers fine & all of a sudden it starts pulling
left.it sometimes stops pulling out of the blue just like it starts...thanks for any help you guys can give.

metalmessiah,

You have two different issues:

1. Leaking down-You have an internal leak in the check valves of the TNT system. This is not typically a do it yourself item.

2. Turning-You need to adjust the trim tab. It is the fin, just above the prop. Loosen the bolt and turn the trailing edge in the direction of the steering pull. Do it in small increments until you get close to "nuetral" steering.

thanks for the tip.I did hope the trim I could fix myself because it seems like I got jacked up by
the guy the put the "new" one on.as far as the trim tab goes, wouldnt that be a consistent steering issue unlike the intermittent problem Im having?like I said, it doesnt happen all the time...not even half the time.every once in a while it will pull for a few minutes & just stop pulling & go back to steering normally.just figured if it was the trim tab it would pull all the time...

Check the manual release valve, insure the valve is tight. The steering torque pull changes with the trim.

manual release is tight.any ideas what it would cost to have someone replace seals in the check valve?why would they go bad so fast?

Lower the engine, remove the manual release valve and check the seal on the tip. The little valve is over US 40.00., if your valve looks bad, try to borrow valve from a shop or friend and try it. You may be close to Trent,he might look at it for you.

Tilt only leak down
trim up relief valve
manual release valve
tilt piston or seals
tilt check valve
oil line

Tilt and trim leak down
trim piston or seals
trim cylinder sleeves
trim check valve
expansion relief valve
