My rig won't hold tilt as I drive it on the trailer. It slams down onto the trim cylinder.
Some guys tell me that's the way the old systems were and some tell me it's not. Could one of you give me the skinny on this?

Sounds like a bad tilt/trim pump or bad seals. There is a possibility that you are just low on fluid also, depending on how the problem started.

Fluid is good, the unit moves and holds ok except
when driving it onto trailer.

You have Trim and Tilt.
You should be able to trim your motor to any position and it should hold to whare you set it , this is the slow moving adjustment. Tilt is when you lift the motor right out of the water this part of the lift is faster,,, You do not ever drive your boat when you are in the tilt range of your lift. They just dont have enough power in this position to hold up the motor and you also have your motor in a dangerous operating condition.
