I just rebuilt my 1989 Force 150 outboard. I have everything back together now but I have never timed an engine before and need to learn how. I looked for videos on google and youtube and found one video that was somewhat helpful. My flywheel does not have any markings on it for timing and was wondering how to do it. I need help because I have been working on this motor for about 6 months now and very anxious to get it running. Thank you.

All of the flywheels have timing marks. Yours should have 4 vertical marks. One by itself, and to the left, three more grouped together.

Thank you. I found the marks and I also found one on the block to use as a reference. How would I time it using these marks?

Re: 89 Force 150 - Timing

I figured it out. The single mark by itself is TDC (Top Dead Center). The other 3 marks that are close to eachother are from left to right 28, 30, 32 degrees. Take the spark plugs out and connect the plug wires to a spark checker or ground them to the block to safely discharge the spark as to not ruin the coils. Unhook your shift linkage and throttle. Manually push to WOT (Wide Open Throttle). Using a timing light match the dash on the block to the 30 degree mark which is the center mark of the 3 that are grouped together. Adjust if nececary. Reinstall spark plugs, wires, throttle and shift linkage. While running the ignition will automatically ajust 2 degrees. The correct timing is 32 degrees at WOT. And that is while running. You have to time it 2 degrees less because the motor is not running when you time it.

This is the correct way to time a boat motor. After a bunch of research and talking to a Marine mechanic I got all the information that I needed. I wanted to post this step by step for other people in case they run into the same problems as me or just wanted to do it themselves rather then paying someone. Thanks for the help to all that did!

When turning the timing screw, which direction advances the timing?
