Hi all.......Im a newbie to this forum, and everyone seems very helpful and ive already got mucho info! Hit a rock hard yesterday and not only took out the prop, but broke the lower gearcase so bad that i could stick my fingers in and touch the gears! Im a car mechanic by trade, and have been a boater for 25 years. I bought this boat from an 80 yr old man who had it from new and used it maybe 5 times. Its like new. Anyone know where i could locate a lower gearcase housing? Im in Maryland...Perhaps I can find one with a junk powerhead. I would appreciate any help.........luckily I have friends to catch a ride to my river cottage for now...........

A lower unit from a 40 or 50 hp, 1984-1994 will fit.

Easier to find a complete lower unit than just the housing.

Best bet is ebay.
Or contact local shops that may have junk motors to part out.

Mercury will still sell you a new empty lower gear housing for $195.

There is a marina on the upper bay that specializes in rebuilding lower units. He probably will have exactly what you need. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name but he also advertises on ebay. Periodically has Chrysler lower units for sale. Pick up a Nor'Easter magazine--free in many places. They have a lot of advertizers in there.

Re: 89 force 50 lower gearcase

Thanx baxtr, but the first place I looked was e bay.......then I looked again after seeing your post and still didnt see it..........I know Merc bought out Force, but im not quite familiar with which parts interchange with what..........id prefer a complete used lower unit..........without a service manual, im not sure how critical the "shimmage" is on this little gearcase........guess ill tear it apart to see what all is damaged............man-o-man, it sure made one *&^@#$% of a noise when I hit!! If I had the $$, id put at least a 90 on it..........its a 16' open bow Maxum......capicity plate says 50HP max, but in my opinion it needs a 150!!!!!!!!...........from day one, its been a tird......im a former big block jet boater and not used to so much time getting on plane, especially with the fluctuating river level down here.
THANKS ALL!!!
