Hi yall. I'm New here, and kinda new to outboard engine repair.

OK here it is. My engine ran great, then plow! it sat for 4 years. I did all the tune up stuff. put the ears on it, and it started great. I noticed I was only getting alittle water coming out of the holes on the back. Started it up the next day and now I'm not getting any water coming out of the 2 holes in the back.

I have an idea on what's wrong, but not sure. When I first took the cover off the engine it was loaded with mice nest, leaves ect. I cleaned them all out. I noticed somewhat looks like sea weed in the lower water intake vents. I think what happen is when I started in up in took whatever seaweed leaves ect that were in there and clogged the intake pipe.

Is this possible? Any ideas on how to fix this problem, or other reasons why this might happen? thanks :)

Also lol any advice on how to free up a severely frozen steering cable?

When an outboard has been sitting for a long time the water pump impeller goes hard. fit a new impeller and you should be ok.

Whaley is right. Change the impeller and when you pull off the lower unit you'll probably find old dried up seaweed jammed up in there also.

As far as a seized up steering cable, good chance it's seized up inside the slide (retaining tube) on the motor. Try and get some penetrating oil in there if you can or see if you can pump some grease into it. I tried what I just said but to no avail. I ended up taking the torch to it and heating it up real hot and finally worked it out.

Good luck.

OK I took off the lower unit, checked out the pump/impeller they both look fine. I wasn't to sure so I took it in to my local shop... They agreed.

Any other advice? I'm stumped!

Also I priced out a new cable, and in look likes it gonna run me about a C-note. Is this a good price? its a detmar 13ft cable.

Heres a thought with the lower unit off take the thermostat out and hook a garden hose up to the water tube. You should get water out of the stat housing. This will flush any thing that got stuck in there. Put the housing cover back on (leave stat out for now) Repeat procedure you should see water circulate out the motor. This will ensure that all water passages are clear. By the way You have the lower end off change the impeller anyway. Four years is a long time for a active impeller let alone one that has been dry that long.

I have an 86 Force 85 hp and I was told that you can't use ear muffs that the pump had to be in water to take a prime.Local shop info, next door is a Holiday Inn, soooooo!

If Slowpoke is right you can try a barrel/bin and fill it with water above the impeller housing.

Follow revertmastec's suggestions first.

Just my 2 c

/Bear

Looks like the impeller and pump problem has been addressed. On the cable issue, took a little time to come up with but it worked. You have to unhook both ends of the cable. Get a piece of fuel hose that will slide over the outer jacket of the cable and snug down with a hose clamp. The hose needs to extend past the end of the interior cable about 6 inches. Find or buy a metal tire stem valve that will fit into the open end of the hose to be snugged down with another hose clamp. fill the hose with a lightweight penetrating oil,WD40, kroil,or 3in1 oil, then insert tire valve, with hose clamp, and pressurize the hose with air. This shuld send the oil to the other end. Hope it works for you like it did for me.

Re: 89 force 85 HP question.

Thanks for the help guys.

Afew more questions. :)

When I took the lower unit off I took the plates under the pump off to see if I could find a block in the intake vents, and chamber. Anyways what should I do to make sure those seals stay sealed? Should I clean off the old sealer, and just replace it with new stuff?

In the past after taking the lower unit off I haven't be able to get it in forward. I don't wanna run into this again. What was the problem? I solved it in the past by taking in back apart messing with it and putting back together. I really don't wanna run into that again. Its a pain. If someone could just decribe the procedure that would be great.

Also I have been reading around here and have seen people talking about checking the lower unit for "milk," and also an over heating alarm? Could someone please let me know what those to refer to?

Again, thanks for the help! I hope I'm not asking to much :)

G'Day. Milk in the oil refers to water and oil mixing, the oil will go white . the same colour as milk. As for not selecting gears I am not really familure with the force but I suggest that you try to obtain a workshop manual that should take you through step by step.
