Re: 89 force 85hp keeps shutting down

Welcome to iboats ejm.

When it boggs down and dies, is the fuel line bulb still full sized, or collapsed?

The engine isn't overheating is it? It still has good water flow out the back?

If there are no other symptoms, I would try a different fuel tank and a complete new fuel hose. You may have a worn out fuel pump, an air leak in the hose, a stuck check valve in the primer bulb, or dirt clogging the fuel pickup in the tank.

If that doesn't do it, rebuild the fuel pump. It will cost you $12 in parts and take about 1/2 hour to do it.

Re: 89 force 85hp keeps shutting down

ejm,

Don't know if this will help but I was having an awful time getting my bulb to prime. I took out my gas tank(plastic kind 16 gallon on pontoon boat) put on a new bulb and hose, held thumb over the end of the hose. still couldn't get prime so it assumed not the fuel pump.

I noticed the top of the tank had bowed down. I pulled the nozzle unit that the hose attaches to the tank UP and I got prime.

What was happening was the pickup tube in the tank was compressed against the bottom, due to the bowing, and shutting off the fuel.

just something to check before you pull everything apart.
