I was having problems with my motor not running quite right. I thought it was a compression problem well I ran a compression check and cylinder #3 has no compression while all others are right around 130-135 range. I have a 1989 125hp force. I am going to replace the piston and ring myself. Does anyone know how easy or hard it is to do? Do they just have a sleeve that slides out? Any helpful hints? Any info would be great. Thanks

Re: '89 Force Piston Replacement

Visionspeed: Got a 1987 125 with the # 3 hole gone also. I'm having mine rebuilt by a dealer. But what I've been told is that being your in there for the age of the motor is to redo all four holes and put in new pistons and rings. I guess what they do is rebore and hone each cylinder if needed. Thats if the other three are wore bad enough or out of spec.
If the one is bad enough they can resleeve it. Also I was told that the piston and rings that were put in origanally where junk and that the new piston and rings are better. Apparently the old style rings brake. I guess I thought I got 15 years out of my motor the rings couldn't of been that bad. So I'm just going by what I've been told. But the reason I didn't tear into mine is I didn't want to get a bunch of money stuck into it and have something screwed up. It seems like everytime I try to save a buck it cost me double. So good luck. But if you do decide to tear into it make sure you take lots of pictures so that way if your not sure how things are routed you got something to go back on. You can get rebuild kits at www.maxrules.com and around here the machine shop gets $25. a hole to bore and hone. Should give you some idea of what kind of money you'd have in it if you want to tackle it.

Visionspeed: Just read your first post. Man sorry to here how you lost that motor. What a way to take it out. No Oil. That would ruin a guys day for sure. What the hell did he do with the oil after bought it? Didn't he give it to you. Unbelievable.

Re: '89 Force Piston Replacement

Yeah I ended up tearing apart the engine last night. I am down to taking off the flywheel and then everything should pop off to get to that piston. I just need to stop by and get a flywheel puller and I should be home free on the first half at least!!!! I will need to get it it bored and honed, but I think that I will be able to get it back together and on the water by this weekend! Hopefully!!! Thanks for the help, I am happy that it doesn't sound like it will cost to much to have them honed and bored at least!
Yeah he put the oil in the back of my truck, he thought that I was putting it in when I got to the lake, no need to worry though he is paying for most of the repairs!!!!! Thanks again for the help
