last year i got a 32' aquachalet with the 89 johnson on it. it started up
quite easily but i could see it needed tlc. the VRO has benn disconnected so
the oil/gas is being mixed 50/1. its only been used (by me) from the launch
to the slip, about 300 yards. I did run it now and again tied to the dockadded seafoam, new gas etc. one plug was real clean, like new, it was the upper right plug, did'nt notice a miss or anything, but had to run a while
before i could put in gear and keep it running. it is put away for the winter
but was wondering why the plug could be so clean.

If it's clean and wet with fuel, there's probably no spark to that cylinder. If it's clean and wet with water, the head gasket may be blown. If it's clean and dry, there may not be fuel flowing to that cylinder.

it was clean and dry, i checked it a couple of times, never moved the
boat until i took it out of the water. i sprayed the carb with carb cleaner,
seafoam but dont think it ever fired. tks for the reply.

If the plug is clean and dry, that means no fuel and that means no oil to lubricate that cylinder. I'd double check the compression on that hole to make sure the rings are still ok. You could have something plugging the carb jets to that piston.

Re: 89 johnson 110

carb clean does nothing for a 2 stroke carb, all it does is go straight into the intake and strips the lube off the interior of the motor, same with engine start spray. to try to start always use premixed fuel/oil.

this is the only way to clean a carb. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=244013
