Hey all,

Finaly got my boat in the water monday :D

I went for 3 trips on about 70 litres of gas and I was pretty much bone dry! The motor hadent been started in 3 years or so, just wondering if this is normal ?

I was at 5400 rpms with a 13 pitch prop for a good 90% of the time.

One of my buddies suggested a carb cleaner to mix in with my fuel, someone else said that it would take a few tanks of gas to get the motor working at peak.

Any thoughts ?

MUCH APPRECIATED!!

Don't know how much 70litres is or how far ya' went but I do know that the cross flows like their gas. I got an 86' 90 horse....so I know. Your best gas saving cruise range is between 35 and 4000 rpm. Mine is around 3600. After setting so long, a good carb cleaning and overhaul would also probably help. And a pump impeller wouldn't hurt either. I did help myself out a little by installing Boyesen reeds. These help on gas saving since they are a dual reed.

Well, that's about 17 US gallons of fuel. It sounds like the engine's running OK, since you gave WOT RPM's and said you were running at high speed most of the time.

Now, the question is: How long were you out, in total? I'll bet you're just seeing how lousy outboards are at fuel economy.

As OBJ suggests, just pull the lever back a little. Go WOT to get up on plane, then back off a bit. Every engine has a sweet spot for high-speed cruising. You'll recognize it when you find it...the boat just seems happy there. The engine sounds relaxed...you're going plenty fast, and your wallet won't be suffering quite as much.

Thanks for the replies!

To answer your questions, I was at wot for just abit over an hour total. The rest of the time I was just trolling.

I guess i'll have to keep the revs down and find that sweet spot :)

I did already change the gear oil in the foot along with the impeller. The gage is reading about 10 - 13 psi at wot, dont know if it should be higher or not ?

Thanks again!

Hi fellow Montrealer ! I have a 120 looper and at WOT I get about 2 hours on 70 ltrs. So you are right in the ball park. Where in Montreal do you boat? I go on Lac St Louis and Lac Deux Montain.

I have a pair of 1987s & get a reading of 18-20 psi on my 2 yr old water pumps - 4-7 psi at idle.
