Just got running a 1989 120. I had it on the muffs and it ran great. The telltale had water squirting out with decent pressure. There was never any water coming out of the two small exhaust ports just below the cowl. I just want to know if there is supposed to be. On my old motor `79 140 water would come out when the thermostats opened and engine was in gear. I do not see this on this motor.

On the muffs you may or may not get a spray. In the water and under power you should get a flow that will increase according to the power. It is important to check that the overheat alarm is functioning properly.

my 87 120HP won't on the muffs, but does just fine in the water. mine also has a diverter and the tell tale is off that (as opposed to the top of the heads).

Something which is worth mentioning is if you have the diverter and tell tale off the diverter is that the thermostat gasket will have a pin hole in one side (on the tab) that hole MUST be clean and free of debris. it is there to allow the air to escape the cylinder heads. (other designs use the tell tale, but no so in the 86's and 87's your 89 might be the same way)

Thanks for the tip. I checked the pin hole and it was clear.
