Hi All,
Trying to get the bearing carrier out of the lower unit so I can change the prop shaft seals. Have removed the 4 retaining screws and I have a puller on it.....it won't budge. Have tried heating the housing up with a propane torch and still can't get anywhere. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Kingfisher

I'm assuming this is a salt water motor for you to have so much trouble removing the bearing carrier. Sometimes it takes a heavy puller and a lot of heat to get them to move when they are badly corroded. If its corroded severely it may break the bearing carrier before it will become disengaged from the housing. Soak the inside with PB Blaster and let it sit overnight with the puller as tight as you can get it. Make sure that you apply heat around where the oring goes around the bearing carrier. If you get too carried away you can damage the seals in the lower unit with the heat, but may not be able to avoid that if it comes down to worst case. I have had to break them apart in pieces to get them out with hammer and chisel (carefully without damaging the propshaft and gears. The bearings in the carrier will probably get destroyed if you have to resort to this. It might be cheaper to just take this one to a shop that has a heavy puller and a lot of experience.

Or take it to a dealer that has the seal remover tool. No need to pop the carrier out. They pull the propshaft seals and pop new ones in. No biggie. The unit doesn't have to come off the motor either.

Thanks for your comments guys. I'm soaking it in PB Blaster with the puller on as tight as I can get it. I'll hit it with mapp gas tonight after work and see if I can get it to budge.
Dhadley, could you describe the seal remover tool. I thought about trying to pry those buggers out. I may have to take it to a shop....hope not.
Thanks again.

All John Rude dealers have a tool that slides down over the shaft and cuts into the seals. There is a bolt at the top so when the old seals are secure, they tighten down on the bolt which presses on the end of the shaft and it pulls the seals out. Then you just put the new seals in with the installer. The whole deal takes 1/2 hr or less. No big deal. Like I say, you don't even have to take the unit off. It takes longer to drain the old grease and run the pressure & vacuume tests than to actually change the seals. Not a big deal at all.

Yep, is the same thing now that you mention it. Only bigger. (Oh boy, here we go with the "bigger tool" thing) Works real slick. Well, you know since youve used the one for the crank seal.

Don't let it bother you King -- they can be a bear. Trust me -- it ain't you.

Rabbitt's advise was right on too. You need to apply heat at the O ring location, not at the back of the housing. Some at the back may help but the O ring is where they stick mostly.

At any rate, glad you "got-r-done". Don't forget to replace the small O rings on the 4 bolts you removed.

BTW -- if you think yours is stuck, you ought to watch someone try to pull a counter rotating gearcase apart with that puller. Kinda funny once you know what's going on.
