I purchased a harmonic balance puller but I tried the bolts that came with it 3/8" x 18 and 24 and the 18 screwed in about a turn or so and then they became hard to turn (don't want to screw up the threads on flywheel)

What size are they?

Do I need shorter bolts or can I just made spacers? Bolts are about 3 inches long.

Can I weld a loop on the center bolt and lift with that or do I need to purchase a different eye bolt for the center threaded hole on the puller?

Working on it right now so any quick response would be helpful.

Thanks,

Hi Lizard. For starters, you don't want to use the bolts that come with the puller. They're almost never strong enough. Instead you'll want to get GRADE 8 bolts and washers. They're available at any Big Box store. On most vintage motors (up to 35 hp, or so) the bolts are usually (1/4" x 20 x 3'), but with that big 90 hp you may need a larger size. In any event the bolts should thread into the holes with ease, but you only want/need to thread them in about 7/16" -1/2". You should also take care to keep the puller as level as possible and keep the fly wheel from spinning. Here's a link that can walk you through the basic procedure and use of the puller. It's for a smaller motor, but the principles are the same.

Lift the motor so I can set it on the transom.

using diagrams at marineengine.com...your year and hp...cylinder and crankcase diagrams..it shows your motor having a lift bracket... is it missing?

AITn,
Yes mine doesn't have the lifting plate ring in the rear of it (wish it did). I finally got it mounted, it wasn't easy and I messed up the paint job a little (will have to touch it up) but it's on the transom now. Just have to assemble all the wiring and cables and then it's ready to go for a spin on the river.

In that case, I would try to lift it with some large nylon straps and make a sling. Perhaps using a block and tackle ("taykle" for the sailors out there) and/or a ratchet to lift it incrementally would work.

If you know what the lifting eye looks like, make one. Any metal fab shop probably has a piece of angle iron laying on the shop floor that they would give you. Drill a couple holes and away you go.
