One of my buddies just purchased a boat with an '89 Johnson GT200 which idles at 1500 rpm which he thinks is a little fast.

The guy is pretty good around stuff like this but says he has been unable to find any way to set the idle.

I thought I would run it by you all to see if I could find him some help.

Thanks
DaveJ

It's set by slowing the timing...
It's also a problem if the throttle plates have not been sync'd...and I "assume" you are doing this "IN" the lake and not on muffs.

Well, he grinned and said that this is on muffs and not the lake. He said that after hearing your response he remembered his Tracker w/9.9 runs a little faster on muffs.

Would you happen to know how / what to set the timing.

As for me, I am surprised that muffs would make any difference. Is that an exhaust pressure thing?

Thanks
DaveJ

Yes, backpressure. Set it in the lake and when it's out of Quick Start. Theres a big plastic knob on the starboard side. Thats the idle timing adjustment. If it won't come down when you back off the adjustment, some models have a screw on the port side under the flywheel. Turn the screw in to set the idle down.
