Just got my first bass boat. Has a mariner 220. One cylinder has low compression not super low just about 15-20 below the rest.. I am praying its carbon. I just got it so I have not touched it yet. Should I try to start it and do a decarb? Or just jump to taking it apart? Will I harm something trying to start it? This is my first mercury/mariner. I have only owned johnson/evinrude. So I am starting to bleed black.. Thanks guys

Pull the head on that side as carbon build up on a efi chrome bore 2.4 block is rarely seen....

faztbullet my expert, you now on mariner ? we would love to hear more about your evinrude ficht 3 cyl V6 idle knowledge

@ op : take the work and pull the head on internet "experts" hints or just use synthetic oil and run the engine, accept its more than 20 years old and might have some compression numbers slightly odd. if it runs good- go boating !

May be a "oops" but at least I work on them daily not just posting googled info like yourself aerobat..

Andrew pull the head as synthetic oil will not help anything but reduce smoke.. 15-20 psi difference shows there is a problem be it a scored cylinder from blown head gasket or lean out from a injector.

Can you adjust the injectors? Or test them? So in your opinion should I tear it apart before I turn the key?

No but than can be sent off and flowed/tested and balanced... I would look in cylinder before doing anything...

Re: 89? Mariner 220 EFI

Good news, I did a compression test and got all zero on one side and looked close and it had no head gasket! I bet the dumbass mechanic removed it to try to have them pay for a full rebuild!! The other 3 were 80 all across, so I am thinking of ordering 2 new head gaskets and see what that does.. Stupid mechanic... So that brings up one more thing.. Where do I send the injectors to?
