This is a 1989 Mercury (under Sea Ray label) 100 h.p. When I give it full throttle, sometimes 4 cyl. will kick in and sometimes not. Occasionally, even when running FOT on all 4 cyl., it will drop back to 2 cyl. I use this boat at 8,300 ft. altitude.

The dealer has changed plugs, rejetted, changed fuel filter without results and finds nothing else wrong.

I called the Mercury tech. advisor and he suggested replacing the trigger, coils, or stator.

Are these equally likely culprits for the symptoms the engine has?

If I'm going to replace one at a time (to save $$), in what order should I do this?

Is it worth buying some test equip. before replacing these parts?

All you need to test those is an ohmmeter and a book with the specs. My money would be on the stator, but it could be any of the above.
