Just got a really fine running Merc 8 HP for my Gheenoe. Its really a sweet motor. I was on the small river near my home last Saturday and thought I had better make sure the motor would "kick up" if I were to hit some flotsam or a stump or the like.
The motor was locked. I looked for a lever or a button of some sort to unlock it but all I found was a rod with a blocking clamp on it, screwed down so the motor would not kick up. It looks to me like it has to be either locked down or with the block thing moved up so that it engages the locking mechanism allowing the foot to be unlocked. Looks like it isn't operated by a simple lever one could flip without tools. Is this correct?
Would it be OK to loosen the set screw and adjust the clamp or block thing upward so that the motor is always unlocked? I do realize in reverse that added power would cause the motor to raise up. Pardon the non-technical terms of the parts involved here, my owners and service manuals are not here yet. Thanks.
