What would cause this and should I install new or install flat plate? Where’s a good place to order parts 1989?

If that old will break, less material, better install one with a built in trim tab, check Iboats..

Welcome aboard.

Show us a picture of the broken trim tab. You should be able to replace the trim anode yourself.

Look at Forum Help in the sig below for help on adding pictures.

It probably looked something like this, use the same style, not a flat anode;

You know now after reading more I thinks it’s maybe Anode ? It’s the small fin right above the prop? I hope this helps and I’ll grab pic!

They break all the time it is made out of zinc and is the anode. Get a new one or don't up to you

After further investigation it looks like my prop hit it too? I don’t think I remember hitting in water?

All anodes deteriorate over time, what you need to replace is a round Anode Trim Tab..

You may have run over a small piece of wood or other trash. Not large enough to damage the prop, but maybe enough to snap off a weak trim tab/anode when the prop threw it off.

I've seen trash hits break off anticavitation plates on an stern drive, and never bother the SS prop.
