I am finally going to start the process of pulling the engine out of my 1989 Four Winns 205 Sundowner, I can't seem to find what size the nuts are that hold the drive on ( pitch thread type). I am having a hard time finding replacement part numbers and a good source for these as well.

I had water in the top bellow because of a tear looks like ill need to replace the u joint in there as it had gotten a little rusty and rusty water was laying in the bellow.

Can you guys give me some things to look for that I may not be aware of when pulling the engine out, like things to check or look at while its apart (including the drive)?

I had no problems shifting last year after the cable was replaced and adjusted properly, no signs on the outside of any problems with the drive or weird sounds.

I want to have this done right so I don't have to tear it apart a second time.

Sadly I think that when I get the new engine in it and any other repair that needs done I am going to put a for sale sign on it while I use it this summer. I am hoping to be a sailboat owner in the future.

Not sure I should help a future blowboat owner??? :)
The nuts are a standard 5/8 locknut.
I use a wobble socket.
Just make sure the mounting hardware is installed right and the alignment is correct before you install the drive.

They are not 5/8". They are a 7/16-20 nylon lock nut.

They should not be SS nylocs, that is a sure way of getting galled thread and stripped out nuts that won't come off.

Ayuh,..... No doubt,....

I think they're actually chrome plated brass nuts.... maybe bronze,..

I know fine threaded lock-nuts are hard to find round here, chrome brass, no way, I get 'em from Merc Dealer...

Thanks for the heads up Bond-o and Don S, saved me lots of frustration later on.
