he caught this snake near muskogee,ok on october 15 2009 at 8:58 a.m.

at 8' and 89#s i would say this could have been a bad situation.............. since he caught it without being bitten i guess it may not be a stupid human trick.

im not afraid of snakes but i dont know that i would have attempted to catch a 8' rattlesnake.

I am skeptical of that being 89 pounds. Look at the way he is holdling it with one arm and the snake is at an arms length. Likewise, it does not appear to be 8 foot. He is holding it straight out and the tail is no where near the ground, so unless he is a good bit over six foot the snake is closer to 5 foot. Probably taken with a wide angle lens.

No, he's holding it with both hands, it could very well be 89 pounds. Regardless of exact size and weight, that is a fat snake!! That thing must have been old to grow that big, I would hate to cross that thing in the woods.

The internet is alive (no pun intended) with fake rattlesnake photos. Just Google "record rattlesnake".

Big snake, even for an Eastern Diamondback. I agree with Terry that the stats are exaggerated. Too bad. The truth would be impressive enough for me.

I would not harm the snake. It is rare and it is a beneficial part of its environment. To avoid ticking it off is my responsibility.

Having the ability to punish you severely for intruding on its life is not a capital offense.

I doubt the 89lbs- (can you hold 89lbs on the end of a stick)but yeah its a big , fat ,nasty lookin one.
I googled National Geographic and they say a 8ft EasternDiamond back rattler weighs 10lbs.

Looks bogus.

I'm not saying the snake isn't the size they say, but that pic looks tampered with. Like the guys face and hands were pasted on in photoshop or something.

Re: 89# rattlesnake

i was a bit skeptical myself........ its hard to believe anything unless you see it with your own eyes these days.

it was sent to me via e-mail. my first cousin is married to a local gamewarden so im gonna give him a call ad see if he knows anything about it.

i can tell you for a fact i have killed a 35" copperhead 2' from my front door......... its girth was right at 10". i have a picture of it somewhere, taken before i had a digital camera back in '99, and i will see if i can find it. it was a beautiful snake but it was in my dogs house ,pit bull, so it had to go.... she didnt want anything to do with it at all.

its not uncommon in my area to find large snakes......... but i have never seen a rattlesnake even close to that size in the wild..... a couple of feet is more common.

even if it is exaggerated a little its still a monster in my eyes......... im not sure snake boots would even help against something like that. a viper that large could just as easily hit you above the boot ...

I dunno. If you straighten that thing out I can see how it could be 8 feet. I do see his other hand in back holding the rod holding the snake. Snakes don't bother me much...........but I think that one would!!!

They are a very important member of the eco-system though like JB said.

Re: 89# rattlesnake

The tail looks wrong in the pic. I've had to dispose of a 6' Eastern diamondback, and the tail pattern didn't look messed up like the one in the photo. I still have the skin, 'cause I ate the snake. Killed the snake because he was in the backyard with the dogs. They were borderline retarded animals that had more balls than brains and wouldn't leave the snake alone.....
