DHadley often refers to an engline lugging at 5100 RPM's, but my manual says that 5000 RPM is WOT. Should I be trying to increase my RPM's?

Re: 89 Rude 88hp RPM Question

The WOT for your engine is 5500 RPM's. You want to be as close to this figure as you can with a normal load on board....

Why does the owners manual state 5000 WOT if it is suppose to be 5500?

Putting more clarity on the question, 'cuz I'm wondering too.

Does this have to do with the changing definition of WOT? We use it all over this board to mean max RPM, but it really means carb throttle plates wide open. With a manually advanced ignition, like in an outboard, these aren't the same thing.

Or, I've seen discussions around today's ethanol based gas needing more RPMs to reduce carbon build up.

Maybe it's both?
