The tilt cylinder for my '89 225 leaks. I really dont want to have to pull the whole tilt assembly off. Is there a way to change the seal without taking the whole assembly off?

Re: 89 tilt leak

Hello

Could you tell us which cylinder? Your questions states the tilt cylinder, could you be refering to one of the trim cylinders? I believe either of them could be done without removing the entire unit. I think the chance for contaminating the system would be much greater leaving it on the engine.
I sympathize with you, as I just finished doing a rebuild on mine and it was not fun at all!! I think if I had to do it again I would try the method you are trying first.
You will need a "Spanner" wrench or a make shift tool to open the system. You should also get a good diagram of the system to use as a guide. Even the Solec Manual I used had a fair diagram and instructions.

My sympathies and best wishes.

Re: 89 tilt leak

it's the tilt cylinder. (center cylinder)

I'm not sure if I get the pin out and disconnect the hydraulic line at the back of it, I think the cylinder might tilt down enough to get the plunger out. I'm not sure though. I want other opinions first before I start banging away on it.

I wish it was the tilt cylinder, I know the seals on those can be changed fairly easy.

Re: 89 tilt leak

The center ram is the most difficult to remove usually. I assume the engine to piston pin is rusted. The only way to get that off is with heat, and a lot of beating with a BFH on a drift pin. Mine was so rusted it took me three days, a busted thumb, 2 or three broken drift pins, several drill bits, working by myself getting the pin out. If you don't have a lot of rust here you will not have a huge problem.
On my mount the pin that holds the bottom of the ram was removable from the side mount without removing the whole unit. (This would allow removal of the ram without removing the whole thing)
Does your unit have this, or is the bottom pin inaccessable while attached? If the pin is inaccesable then you have no choice but to remove the whole unit.

Here's a little tip, if you are going to have to remove the whole unit, ensure you can remove all the mounting bolts first. The very last one on mine was corroded so badly I had to cut the unit off and replace the entire thing. After cutting the off the TT unit I still had to get specially hardened drill bits to get the remnants of the stainless steel bolt out of the bracket before installing the replacment TT.

All in all I had to remove and install the TT 3 times... Long story...to long to post.

As I posted before, if you can afford to pay someone to do this....Pay em!
