Hey guys,

My father-in law just bought a nice 89 20ft tracker pontoon. The boat has a 87 model 30hp Johnson tracker outboard on it and it lacks the giddy up he was hoping for. Now he wasn't expecting it to be a rocket, being a pontoon boat, and I think the motor is operating to it's full potential as a 30hp, but it would be fun to pull a tube around if we wanted. Is there anything that can be done to increase the Hp? I understand that it's the same base motor from 20hp to 35hp (so I was once told) and that putting a 30hp carb. on a 25hp Jonson will pull the hp rating up 5 hp (again, so I was once told), but will that work from 30hp to 35hp? Is there any truth to any of that and are there any other tricks that can be done to increase the Hp on his motor other than prop swapping. He really doesn't want to trade motors, but would like to get 50Hp out of the one he has, is that possible? Anyway, thanks for any advice or ideas you are willing to share.

Re: 89 tracker pontoon

Leave the mtr alone as for an extra 5 hp you won't notice the difference. The only answer is to get a bigger mtr for what he wants to do. What's the hp rating on the boat ??

Re: 89 tracker pontoon

60hp is the max rating. He said he should have held out for one with a 50hp on it and he is probably correct, but he has spent most of his money, so buying a different motor is not really an option right now. He just wants to do what he can for now, so we are still looking for any ideas that would squeeze a few more Horses out.

The boat is at 50% of it's rated hp. For it to perform correctly it should have a mimimum of 80%. Figure it out.

Re: 89 tracker pontoon

I was able to get some useful answers and will be able to do a couple of reliable things to the motor and gain 10HP bringing the total to 40HP. not the 50Hp we were hoping for but it will help until he can save up for a larger HP motor this winter. We figured out that more HP was needed (before I posted for help) and that 48HP (80% of max HP rating) was the minimum needed, but felt finding a 50HP (83.33% of MHPR) would be easier when the time comes to do an upgrade.

casey - I would be interested in your reliable things that would allow a 25% gain in hp.

It sounds to good to be true, and things like that usually turn out to be a bust, at least for me.

Sent you a pm.
