I picked up a 1989 8hp yamaha (model 8sf) a couple years ago. First season ran great. Second season would start but then stall out when giving it the gas so put it away for the season cause I had other issues to deal with. This season I pull it out and it will not even start. Plugs has a good amount of oil on them so put new plugs in. Still wont start (no sign of engine even catching) but I have spark, new gas, no leaks.

Any ideas??

I'm thinking it's the carburetor (please stop me if you think I'm wrong). I've never taken one apart to clean so I think this would be a good simple one to start with seeing how there is only one. I just ordered a carb repair kit. Do I need any other parts or will the kit have everything i should need?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: 8hp carb issue? repair kit?

If a motor has good compression and good spark then fuel is the next thing to look at.
Carbs are not difficult to take apart and clean. make sure you check to see how the pilot mix adjusting screw is adjusted so it can go back to that point unless you have already changed the setting from where it was running good at.
A Yamaha manual is a good thing to have to give you the specs of everything.

Check the fuel pump also to make sure all is functioning well.
Good luck and have fun.

Re: 8hp carb issue? repair kit?

I have a T8 in the shop now for stalling. I got a crash course today from the shop about the poor gas and how it starts to fowl up in 30 days, I am having my carb jets cleaned out and gas pumped out of the tank, I run my boat twice sometimes four days a week. Use an addative everytime, shop stated that they use to see a few boats a year with this gas related issues, now almost half are related to bad gas, water in gas, clogged systems. the good news is, it sounds like your engine just needs a good sync up and new gas. he did not have an answer to keep it clean, I think I am going to start running it out of gas when I store it during down time. I dont know about the carb jets on your year engine, I know I would just screw it up of I tried to clean out mine. Good luck let us know if you find out anything.

Re: 8hp carb issue? repair kit?

Thanks for the advice. I ordered a repair manual and the carburetor repair kit and hope to get it for the weekend. I haven't checked the compression yet but will do that tonight. Another neighbor of mine was having stalling issues with her engine and was told to put in the additive to the gas. According to her, since then she has had no problems. I have a hard time believing that the additive will completely solve the problem but maybe she's right. I'll give it a shot after cleaning the carbs.
