Likey in the wrong place to ask this....I'm buying a 1996, 8hp murcury short shaft, motor in mint shape. Just wondering how reliable the motor is and I will be putting it on a Zodiac cadet 340 solid..I'm not to knowledge able on the boating thing as it is my first year. Just wanted a little input.

Thanks,
Bryan

Its as reliable as any modern used motor.
That is, if it was cared for properly, it should last many years.

You should make sure it runs properly before you buy it.
Use fresh gas, with oil added, and put in a new water pump impeller.

Happy boating.

While you are at it you also ought to drain and refill the gearbox in the lower unit. Plenty of info on here as to how. Use Marine gear oil. WW in the sporting goods department and that's also where you can buy your 2 cycle marine rated oil for mixing with the gas in the tank. Assuming you have the 3 gallon tank for that size engine. Ratio is a 1/2 pint to 3 gallons of 87 octane gas.
