Anyone used a set of 8in full range speakers? with an amp? i currently have a set of 4in up front and 6 1/2 in the rear, and he rear are blown and i am going to replace them. i am just wondering how they would sound with the 8in three ways with a small amp.

Re: 8in Marine speakers??

Well, it would definetly depend on the quality of the speakers first, and also on the quality of your head unit and amp and wiring. In general, the 8" speakers should sound better than either 6 1/2" or 4" speakers primarily because they will be able to produce more bass. Don't expect it to be subwoofer type bass, but it will outperform the other 2 for sure, especially if there is some sort of enclosure behind them. One thing to consider, the 4" speakers in the front will be a limiting factor as they cannot produce the same low frequencies as the 8" speakers, so you might be limited as to your volume output before distortion because the 4" will distort before the 8". so you will not get everything you can from the 8"s. There is a solution to that problem however. 1 is to disconnect the 4" speakers altogether, the second is to install a crossover for them to keep the low bass frequencies out. Some amps have built in crossover, and if your amp is a 4 channel amp,it might have 2 crossovers in it, 1 for each pair of speakers. That would be ideal as you can adjust them individually. A passive(inline) crossover is also a possibility. Just wire it inline with your 4" speakers and it should work as well. Do a search online for passive crossovers or bass blockers, and that should get you going.
