I just purchased a 1964 johnson seahorse 9 1/2 hp motor for my 14' v bottom (paid $250). the dealer advised that it ran great; which it does. I put it on the boat and it would not engage the forward gear. I then took it back to the dealer, who's service dept. was backed up as usual this time of year, and he told me he would fix the problem at no cost and figured it was the clutch dog. Three weeks later the part comes in and they get around to opening this little motor up and discover that the gears are stripped. He now tells me that it would be very expensive to replace the gears and wants to give me my money back. Which is fine. But,I'm wondering if I can find a lower unit for this motor, would it be worth the expense to change it out or should I just try to find another motor. the motor itself does run great.

Thanks in advance,
Trp251
